Strange Tree
We came upon a tree that had these strange bumps under the tree that were very interesting looking. I took some photos of these unique growths.

oh wow, those are really strange looking. Have you figured out what they are? Are those possibly roots growing up?
Those are usually the result of insect or mold infestation. They are called burls.
You're right, these are very strange. I have never seen anything like them. They must be caused by something from outside such as a parasite.
That strange tree was a Bald Cypress {Taxodium distichum} It is a species of conifer. The bumps are called Cypress Knees. They are part of the root system. It was a hoooot photographing these beasty bumps with you :)

I was going to say cypress knees. The Narrow and taller "knees" are great for painting on. You usually see Santa painted on them.
